I don't disagree with Scully dom/Mulder sub on the basis gender roles or anything. There have been many, many power imbalance woman Domme pairings in my fandom history, including M/F pairings (I spent 2021 thru 2023 obsessed with RomanGerri for gds sake, very messy power dynamics plus woman dom/man sub and a textually explicit side of humiliation kink).

It's not even that I don't see Mulder as sub capable, though I do think it starts to intersect badly with negative 'jewish man' stereotypes beyond a certain point. Obviously yes, he craves being taken care of and will endanger himself to facilitate that if he has to, and is terribly weak to praise.

It's Scully. Scully isn't Stella Gibson, or GA, and she's not whatever popular girlboss tropes people love to see. She's not unsexual! It's not that i think she doesn't have desire, but Scully's awkward. She's oblique. She deflects. She finds intimacy terrifying. She has a lot tied up in her sense of dignity. She's extremely controlled except for the ways she likes to give over that control to a very specific person, but that control is about herself not asking it from others. She textually explicitly seeks people to follow and rebel against because she gets a thrill out of it but she doesn't textually seek to flip the script. She also doesn't seem to want to be the one to make the first move even if she tries to maneuver to invite that move in arguably a few places.

Faced with the concept of leading/commanding sex improve, even in a trusting and familiar relationship, I think she'd freeze up, and even after she got used to the idea, not really enjoy it. She would probably be happy enough to do it for Mulder, but it would be something he would have to ask for instead of something she would seek out herself, and I don't think he would ask often because he would be able to see it makes her kind of uncomfortable. And he wouldn't want to make her uncomfortable in their intimate things.

i just feel like there's a lot of pressure to engage with this specific dynamic to make sure scully always has 'more power' in an intimate relationship dynamic between them because that's 'what she deserves' and mulder always having less 'power' is what he 'deserves.' When relationship wide or absolute intimacy power balances aren't really what D/s dynamics or subtext are about, nor is that 'keep him on a leash keep him humble through intimacy' a concept that Scully would seem to want or enjoy, as per text i saw on screen.
